We built this because we needed it ourselves.
Hearthslate started in our own kitchen. We're a homeschool family who got tired of stitching together a math app, a reading app, a curriculum store, a compliance spreadsheet, and a transcript generator. So we built one place that does all of it — for ourselves first, and for every family on the same road.
A couple of years ago we made the call to pull our kids out of school. There were a lot of reasons — the loud ones and the quiet ones. We were excited. We were also terrified. What if we're missing something? What if they fall behind? What does “doing it right” even look like?
The first three months were a mess. Eight browser tabs open at any given time. Khan Academy in one, IXL in another, a printable workbook taped to the fridge, a spreadsheet tracking what counted as “hours” for our state, a half-finished year plan I kept meaning to fix. The kids were doing fine. I was the bottleneck. The planning and paperwork were eating the actual teaching.
What I kept wanting was simple. One placewhere my kids' lessons lived. One dashboard that told me what they did this week. One systemthat knew our state's rules and prepped the paperwork. And a tutor that could actually teach a topic when I was busy, not just hand my kid a video to passively watch.
That's what Hearthslate is. It's the product I would have paid almost anything for in our first homeschool year — and the thing I now use every weekday with my own kids.
What I personally care about most:
- A whiteboard tutor that actually teaches. Not a video. Not a slide deck. A live drawing with a voice, the way the best teacher I ever had explained things to me.
- An AI tutor that asks before it answers. My kids will absolutely try to outsource their homework to a chatbot. Our tutor is built to refuse — to teach step-by-step instead.
- A curriculum that teaches what matters. Math, science, history, English — done well. But also personal finance, cooking, communication, civic literacy, basic home repair. The stuff school never gets to. That stuff is the whole point of being home.
- A planner that knows your state. Different rules in every state. The paperwork is real. I've been audited. Hearthslate does this for you.
- Records that build themselves. Transcripts, portfolios, attendance — generated automatically from what your child actually did this week.
We charge one yearly subscription so the math is simple. There's no upsell tier, no module fees, no “premium curriculum” locked behind another paywall. What we ship goes to every subscriber. And we ship every week — especially on the whiteboard tutor, which is the feature I personally touch most.
One last thing: I read every email that comes into support. If you sign up and something is broken or missing or weird, write to me and I'll see it. We're small on purpose. Hearthslate is what we use with our own kids — so it has to work.

Three things we promise.
No fake gloss.
We don't oversell. The product page tells you what we are and what we aren't. If a feature isn't where it needs to be, we say so. The whiteboard tutor is getting better every week — and we don't pretend it's already perfect.
No data weirdness.
We don't sell your kid's data. We don't train models on your kid's homework. We don't run third-party ad pixels on the student dashboard. Your family's records are yours.
No friction to leave.
Cancel with two clicks from your billing page anytime — no phone tree, no 'are you sure' survey, no retention department. Your next renewal stops, and you keep full access until the end of the current paid term.
